Aging Gracefully with Ayurveda

Would you Like to Age Gracefully?

Does getting older scare you? If you answered yes, do you know the reason why? Would you like to learn ways to age gracefully and feel good along the way?

Growing older has never really bothered me but I have been concerned about the aging process. That is until I found Ayurveda. Ayurveda changed my outlook in so many ways. I’ve learned I don’t have to accept the aches and pains, diseases and overall deterioration that is commonly viewed as being part of old age.

Don’t get me wrong, the body will still age, but we can slow the process down and have it be more graceful and enjoyable. It’s all about balance. That balance is achieved when we connect to our body’s innate intelligence. We were born listening to that intelligence but often are programmed to ignore it as we grow up.

It’s helpful to understand how the 5 elements; earth, fire, water, air, and space influence our mind, body and spirit.

Whether you realize it or not, all these elements are alive in each one of us. Ayurveda identifies our elemental make up as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, known as the three doshas. We are each unique in how much we carry for each, but we have them all.

To give you a quick overview of what I mean let’s begin with Vata. Vata is comprised of air and space. Within the body vata is responsible for transportation, movement, and communication. Think nervous system and anything to do with moving things around in the body.

Pitta is comprised of fire with some water (steam). Pitta controls digestion, metabolism, and transformation. The fire element really describes what’s going on. You need heat to digest and create energy. And that heat breaks things down so that it can transformed into materials in which the body can metabolize it.

Kapha is comprised of earth and water. Kapha is responsible for structure, strength of the immune system, and lubrication.  Here you can think of things that build the body and keep things running smoothly through lubrication. Joints are great example.

The 5 elements can be used to describe all of nature, times of day, times of life, daily activities, and the food we eat.

Knowing the principles that govern the elements of the doshas is how balance is maintained or restored.  Keeping things in balance allows us to age gracefully in a way only being in tune with our innate intelligence can offer.  Ayurveda is the science of longevity for a reason.
